If you’re considering abortion, it’s good to know that a medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, uses two powerful medications taken over a 24–48 hour period to end a pregnancy. Learning about the procedures, potential risks, and how far along you are is an important step before making a decision.

Abortion Methods
There are different surgical methods depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Each method requires dilation (opening) of the cervix, and some also require anesthesia. The Abortion Pill

The abortion pill is an early termination method using two different drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, usually taken in two doses. The abortion pill is not an option for people with certain medical or health conditions, if the pregnancy is not viable, or if the pregnancy occurs outside of the uterus.

Side Effects

The FDA cites the following possible and reasonably likely side effects of these drugs:

  • Cramping and bleeding. Bleeding or spotting can be expected for an average of 9-16 days and may last up to 30 days. You may see blood clots and tissue.
  • Other common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, back pain, and fatigue. These side effects lessen after Day 3 and are usually gone by Day 14.
  • More serious side effects include heavy bleeding or fever. Fever may be a symptom of a serious infection or another problem, including ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy requires immediate medical attention.

Note: The abortion pill goes by many names including missed period pills, at-home abortion, self-managed abortion, 10-week-after pills, medication, medical, or chemical abortion. Aspiration Abortion

Aspiration abortion procedures, also referred to as vacuum aspiration, can be performed up to 13 weeks after a woman’s last menstrual period (LMP). It is the most common early surgical abortion method, and it is an outpatient procedure. Aspiration abortion is sometimes performed in the event of a medication abortion failure. It is more invasive than a medication abortion and is a procedure that ends a pregnancy by removing the embryo or fetus and placenta from the uterus (or womb).

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)

A D&E abortion is typically performed 13 weeks or more after a woman’s last known period (LMP). It is the most common second-trimester surgical abortion method and requires doctors to dilate the cervix and use surgical instruments to end the pregnancy. Local anesthesia or sedation is commonly utilized.

Side Effects after First-Trimester Surgical Abortion

Normal side effects of a first-trimester surgical abortion include:

  • Abdominal cramps
  • Light vaginal bleeding
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sore breasts
  • Fatigue

Although rare, if a major complication happens to you, it is significant. These complications may include:

  • Infection. The chance of infection increases if you have a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Uterine perforation or cervical tears or lacerations.
  • Hemorrhaging can result in bleeding sufficient enough that a blood transfusion or hospitalization is required.
