Don’t Make a Pregnancy Decision
Without This One Critical Step

You just found out you’re pregnant. Whether the result was expected or completely unexpected, it’s normal to feel a wave of emotions — confusion, fear, uncertainty, or even shock. You might be wondering what your next step should be, especially if circumstances in your life feel complicated or overwhelming. In moments like this, having accurate, compassionate medical information is essential. And one of the most important first steps you can take is getting an ultrasound.

At Options for Women, we believe every woman deserves clear, compassionate, and evidence-based information before she makes any life-changing decision. That’s why we offer free pregnancy ultrasound services in addition to pregnancy testing, STD screening, and pregnancy counseling. If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, here’s why getting an ultrasound should be your first step.

What is an Ultrasound, and Why Does It Matter?

A pregnancy ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging procedure that uses sound waves to create a picture of what’s happening inside your uterus. It’s one of the most valuable tools in confirming whether a pregnancy is viable, meaning the pregnancy is developing inside the uterus and progressing normally.

In fact, many women don’t realize that up to 1 in 3 early pregnancies end in miscarriage, often before symptoms even appear (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 2021). That means a positive pregnancy test doesn’t always equal a continuing pregnancy.

A pregnancy ultrasound can tell you:

  • If the pregnancy is located in the uterus (to rule out ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening)
  • If the pregnancy is viable, meaning there is a heartbeat and normal development
  • How far along you are (which affects what options are available)
  • If there are multiple gestations (twins or more)

This is information you deserve to have before making any decision about parenting, adoption, or abortion.

The Emotional Power of Knowing

When you’re in the midst of a big decision, not knowing what’s going on in your body can add unnecessary stress. Some women walk into Options for Women feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. But after an ultrasound, many say they feel more grounded—even if their situation hasn’t changed—because now they know the facts.

Your mental and emotional health matter. Knowing exactly what’s happening inside your body can bring clarity and peace of mind. Whether you are leaning toward parenting, adoption, or considering abortion, an early pregnancy ultrasound can give you the tools to think clearly and make an informed decision that aligns with your values and circumstances.

Why It’s Especially Important If You’re Considering Abortion

If you’re considering abortion—whether surgical or the abortion pill—getting an ultrasound is not just recommended, it’s critical.

Here’s why:

  • Gestational age matters. The abortion pill (also called a chemical or medical abortion) is FDA-approved for pregnancies up to 10 weeks. An ultrasound confirms exactly how far along you are, which affects which abortion procedures are available to you.

  • Ectopic pregnancy cannot be treated with abortion. If the pregnancy is growing outside the uterus, the abortion pill won’t work—and could actually delay urgent care.

  • Incomplete information can lead to emotional trauma. We’ve met many women who later shared that they wished they had more information before making a decision. An ultrasound can provide that clarity.

And remember: Options for Women does not provide or refer for abortions. Our mission is to give you accurate medical information, emotional support, and practical resources so you can make an empowered decision.
