An ultrasound confirms if you truly are pregnant.  Thirty three percent of pregnancies end in natural miscarriage. Therefore, the best way to confirm a viable pregnancy is through an ultrasound. Additionally, how far along the pregnancy is can be determined by ultrasound.   This will then determine the type of abortion that is available to you. If you are less than 6 weeks pregnant, you may be eligible for a medical/chemical abortion which usually does not require a surgical procedure.

On average, during ovulation is when you get pregnant. This happens about two to three days each menstrual cycle and occurs around two weeks after your last period.

Before you take the abortion pill, it is important to confirm the following: 

• Viability of the pregnancy (able to continue on its own or if you are at risk for a natural miscarriage)

• The location of the pregnancy (and if it’s intrauterine or ectopic)

• Your estimated due date or how far along you are

• Confirm your Rh factor

• Remove IUD if needed

• Side effects, what to expect, and drugs used in the abortion pill regime (to avoid potential allergic reactions or complications)

Common side effects and risks include cramping, contractions, heavy bleeding that can last up to sixteen to thirty days, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, infection, blood clots, dizziness, and abdominal pain.

Women who have an untreated STI are up to 25% more likely to develop Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) following an abortion procedure. So, testing for STIs should happen before you make a decision about your pregnancy.  You can receive treatment from your doctor or through the health department.
