Home Pregnancy Tests
Each brand of pregnancy test varies in the sensitivity of how much hCG is needed to trigger a positive result. For best results, (in most cases) it’s best to wait one week after missing a period before taking a home pregnancy test. Since each brand of home pregnancy test varies, make sure that you read the specific instructions for how to conduct the test to how the results are to be interpreted.
There are a variety of tests ranging from cassettes and strips that show colored lines to digital read out tests. A recent study showed that results are misinterpreted 30 to 40% of the time when a woman uses a cassette and/or strip test. The tests that offer digital displays are much easier to read and to use. The downside is, those generally tend to be more expensive.
It’s best to wait 5 to 7 days after missing your period before taking a home pregnancy test. Best results will come from testing your first urine in the morning. Do not drink a lot of excess water prior to the test as that could dilute your urine.
Home pregnancy tests will only indicate hormone levels, they do not confirm you have a viable pregnancy that will develop. 1/3 of all pregnancies end up in natural miscarriage. It’s always in your best interest to get confirmation of a pregnancy from a medical professional. An ultrasound exam is the quickest and most accurate method to confirm pregnancy and to determine how far along the pregnancy may be.
