Know Your Normal: Why Self-Breast Exams Matter
Do you know what’s normal for your body?
As women, it can be easy to overlook breast health and skip regular self-exams. Because we see our bodies every day, subtle changes can go unnoticed. That’s why it’s important to take time each month to understand how your breasts normally look and feel. Since a woman’s body goes through frequent changes, being familiar with what’s normal for you can help you recognize when something is different.
Simply seeing the outside of your breasts isn’t enough—regular self-exams can help you notice early signs of breast cancer.
What do I do when I recognize a change in my breast?
When you notice a change in how your breasts feel, it may not always indicate that you are experiencing a serious complication. It’s important to check your menstrual cycle calendar to see if you have an upcoming period. During your menstrual cycle, it’s common to feel different hormonal changes and symptoms like tenderness, swelling, firmness, and nipple sensitivity. If you are experiencing these changes, check where you are in your cycle, as your breasts can feel different depending on the phase.
During your cycle, the way your breasts feel normally can change drastically. However, if you are not on your period and it’s not related to an upcoming cycle, it’s important you speak to a nurse to better understand what could be causing the unusual changes in your breasts. You can use our 24/7 nurse chat to get your questions answered or call Options for Women at (863)393-6988.

When to do a self-breast exam:
- Best Time: A few days after your period ends
- No Periods: Choose one consistent day each month
How To Perform A Self-Breast Examination:
Step 1: Look In The Mirror
Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and arms by your side, then look for any visible changes on both breast, nipples and the area surrounding it (areolas). Look for noticeable changes such as redness, discharge, or dimpling of the skin.
Step 2: Raise Your Arms
While standing, put one arm behind your head, and use the three middle fingers of the other hand to gently and deeply examine the area surrounding the breast. Once you are finished with one breast, do the same procedure on the other breast.
Step 3: Check While Laying Down
Lie down on a flat surface, use the underside of your fingertips, by gently moving them in small circular motions around the whole breast and armpit. Try to feel around for lumps, and once you’re done with one breast, switch sides.
Step 4: Notice Any Abnormal Changes
If you feel any new lump (which might have a rubbery texture), thickening, or unusual changes in the skin or nipple, it is important to keep track of what you felt originally and set up an appointment with a healthcare provider.
Helpful Tip
If you have a busy schedule and find it difficult to set aside time each month to perform this procedure in front of a mirror or while lying down, consider doing it in the shower instead. The shower can be a great alternative, as the warm water and soapy skin make it easier to feel any changes in your breast.
Reminder
- Even if you’re unsure, it is always better to get it checked early. If you detect cancer early, it makes a big difference in the outcome of your treatment.
- Try to avoid self-diagnosing, because internet searches can be inaccurate and unhealthy for your mental state. Rely on a medical professional for an accurate diagnosis.
